CentOS Linux 8 released on September 24, 2019. It is a Linux distro derived from RHEL 8. Red Hat released RHEL version 8.0 on May 7, 2019.
Main architectures
- x86_64 (w/ i686 multilib)
- ppc64le (Little Endian)
- aarch64 (ARM64, ARMv8)
Some interesting highlights from the new release of Centos8 are as follows:
- Java 8 and Java 11 are both supported and native to the platform
- Python 3 is the default but you have to install it yourself with yum
- supports secure-boot guests or VMs which use cryptographically signed images to ensure integrity.
- New Stratis storage management tool
- Improved memory management and support.
- The process scheduler made many enhancements.
- Session Recording which can be used for recording all activity of users who connect to a system via ssh. This could be interesting from a security point of view.
- XFS Copy on Write Data Extents which can help with performance and disk usage by not copying large files until data is changed in the copy
- chrony is a versatile implementation of the Network Time Protocol (NTP). It can synchronise the system clock with NTP servers and is default on CentOS 8. Old ntpd is gone.
- System Wide Cryptographic Policies, which make it easier to create and manage configurations of all the necessary security protocols that are available such as network, disk, dns encryption, and kerberos etc.
- Encrypted Root FileSystem for enhanced security
In summary CENTOS 8 release especially for Security, Performance, and Containerization and Virtualization.
